Yamaha MT 03 Review: Features, Colours, Specs and Price in India

Yamaha MT 03 has been launched in India at a price of Rs 4.6 lakh (ex-showroom). The aggressive streetfighter motorcycle will compete against bikes like the KTM 390 Duke and TVS Apache RTR 310 in the segment. Let’s take a detailed look at what the Yamaha MT 03 has to offer Indian buyers.

Yamaha MT 03 Design and Styling

The Yamaha MT 03 features a muscular streetfighter design highlighted by an exposed engine and beefy fuel tank. The headlight is an LED projector unit similar to the MT-15. The overall styling gives the bike an aggressive and sporty look.

The chunky fuel tank, exposed engine and stubby exhaust make the MT 03 look quite muscular when viewed from the side. The rear section with its split seat and LED taillight resembles the Yamaha R3 sportbike.

Colour Options on Yamaha MT 03

The Yamaha MT 03 is offered in two colour options – Midnight Black and Midnight Cyan. Both choices complement the streetfighter styling nicely. Customers can choose the shade that fits their personality. The Yamaha has also launched MT-09 recently in India with colour options of Storm Fluo, Icon Blue and Tech Black.

Features and Equipment on the MT 03

In terms of features, the Yamaha MT 03 gets an all-digital LCD instrument cluster. It displays basic information like speed, rpm, clocks and trip meters. However, there is no smartphone connectivity or riding aids like traction control.

The lighting system is all-LED including the headlamp. Dual-channel ABS is offered as a standard for added safety. Overall, features are quite basic considering the premium price tag. More equipment was expected on this CBU import model.

Engine Specifications and Performance

At the heart of the MT 03 is a 321cc liquid-cooled parallel twin engine, which is shared with the Yamaha R3 sportbike. This motor generates 42 PS power at 10,750 rpm and 29.5 Nm torque peaking at 9,000 rpm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed constant mesh gearbox.

Performance should be brisk thanks to the free-revving twin-cylinder motor. The mid-range punch will make city riding a breeze while top-end power should satisfy enthusiasts. The engine offers a versatile character suitable for everyday city use or weekend fun.

Mileage and Fuel Efficiency

Yamaha claims a mileage of 26.31 kmpl for the MT 03 under standard testing conditions. This is decent efficiency for a 300cc performance bike. Thanks to the twin-cylinder engine, the bike should deliver good mileage when ridden sanely in the city.

A large 14-litre fuel tank means riders can expect a range of over 350 km once tanked up. This reduces the frequency of trips to the fuel station.

Ride and Handling

The bike employs a diamond frame shared with the R3. Suspension duties are handled by a 37mm inverted fork up front and preload-adjustable mono-shock at the rear. This offers a planted and confident ride even at high speeds. The bike weighs 167 kg which aids in nimble handling.

Braking performance comes from 298mm front and 220mm rear disc brakes with dual-channel ABS. The ABS ensures safe stopping power in all conditions. Dunlop tyres wrap 17-inch alloy wheels and provide ample grip. Overall the Yamaha MT 03 promises sporty and engaging handling characteristics.

Comfort and Convenience

The bike gets a slightly aggressive riding position better suited for performance. The seats are well-padded and should be comfortable enough for short rides. Pillion comfort seems decent aided by grab rails.

The switchgear looks functional while the all-digital instrument cluster is easy to read on the go. The muscular 14-litre fuel tank offers a decent range between refuelling stops. The MT 03 does not offer any storage space, however.

Price in India

The Yamaha MT 03 is priced at Rs 4.6 lakh ex-showroom for the standard variant. This premium pricing is due to the model being a CBU import from Indonesia. At this price point, the MT 03 competes with bikes like KTM 390 Duke and Apache RR 310.

Yamaha MT 03 Verdict

The Yamaha MT 03 offers an exciting streetfighter package for enthusiasts. Performance from the 321cc engine is sure to impress while handling has sportbike genes. Build quality and fit-finish levels are top notch as expected from Yamaha.

However, the lack of features and very premium pricing may make it a tough sell for some buyers. The MT 03 makes for an appealing motorcycle overall for those seeking an engaging streetfighter experience in a middleweight package.
