Will Marvel’s Echo Season 2 Return? Series DP Responds

The future of Echo Season 2 remains uncertain, according to comments from the Disney+ series’ director of photography.

Kira Kelly, who served as DP on Marvel Studios’ Echo Season 2, recently spoke about the possibilities of a second season in an exclusive interview. When asked if she felt a season 2 would be a good next step for star Alaqua Cox, Kelly said she was “not sure” but would “love any excuse” to see Cox perform again.

“I’m not sure about that. I feel like the world—You know, anything that we can see Alaqua [Cox] would be amazing. Whether it’s another season for her or whether or not she’s in the ‘Daredevil’ show coming up or any other show. I would just love any excuse to see Alaqua perform again,” Kelly said.

No Word Yet on Echo Season 2

Kelly’s comments suggest that concrete plans for Echo Season 2 have not yet been put into motion. The series was designed as a limited spinoff of 2021’s Hawkeye focused on expanding Cox’s Maya Lopez, also known as Echo.

So far, Marvel Studios has not provided any official word on whether Echo Season 2 is in active development. The show’s lukewarm critical reception may discourage Marvel from greenlighting a second season.

Potential for More Maya Lopez Stories

However, Kelly’s remarks indicate there is interest in doing more with Maya Lopez and Cox’s acclaimed performance. Echo‘s connections to the broader MCU also allow room for Maya’s story to continue.

The series directly sets up the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again with the returns of Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin. This presents opportunities for Cox to reprise her role as Lopez in the next installment of Daredevil’s saga.

What Could Happen in Echo Season 2

If renewed, Echo Season 2 has several narrative threads it could explore further:

  • The complex relationship between Maya and her surrogate uncle Wilson Fisk/Kingpin
  • Maya’s ancestry and connection to her Native American roots
  • Maya’s friendship with Daredevil and their shared crusade for justice in New York
  • More on Maya’s family introduced in season 1, including her grandmother (Tantoo Cardinal), uncle Henry (Chaske Spencer), and cousins (Devery Jacobs and Cody Lightning)
  • Maya embracing her identity as the superhero Echo and learning to control her photographic reflexes

The Future of Maya Lopez

While the next chapter for Echo Season 2 remains ambiguous, Cox’s Maya Lopez still has room to grow in the MCU. The character formed close bonds with fellow street-level heroes like Daredevil and Kate Bishop’s Hawkeye.

She also has unfinished business with Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk, who was positioned as a key figure in the MCU’s street-level narrative going forward.

Even if Echo Season 2 doesn’t materialize, there are plenty of opportunities for Cox’s Echo to live on in Daredevil, Hawkeye, or even a Young Avengers project. For now, fans will have to wait and see if and when Maya Lopez suits up again in the MCU.
