The R-Rated Disney+ Dark Sci-Fi Snowpiercer Thriller Featuring A Marvel Superstar

Before directing the Oscar-winning Parasite, acclaimed filmmaker Bong Joon Ho took on class warfare in the chilling sci-fi thriller Snowpiercer. Now available on Disney+, Snowpiercer stars Chris Evans in a dystopian story about a frozen Earth.

With its R-rating and violent class uprising, Snowpiercer makes for an unusual addition to Disney’s streaming library. But the poignant sci-fi movie is worth watching, especially for fans of Evans’ work as Captain America.

The Icy Post-Apocalyptic Premise of Snowpiercer

In the near future, humanity tries to reverse climate change by cooling the planet, but the experiment backfires catastrophically. The attempt kicks off a new ice age that kills off all life on Earth, except for the passengers aboard the Snowpiercer train.

On this high-tech locomotive, the last vestiges of humanity have formed a stark class system. The privileged ride in luxury at the front, while the poor are crammed into squalid tail compartments.

After 17 years of circling the frozen planet, the lower-class passengers finally rebel. Led by Chris Evans’ character Curtis, the tail-section riders battle their way car-by-car towards the engine to overthrow the wealthy rulers.

Captain America and Song Kang-Ho Lead the Talented Cast

Snowpiercer represents Chris Evans’ first collaboration with renowned Korean director Bong Joon Ho, known for movies like Okja and Parasite. Evans got the lead role of revolutionary Curtis, backed up by Bong favorite Song Kang-Ho as security specialist Namgoong Minsu.

Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton also co-stars as the absurdist Minister Mason, spokesperson for the ruling 1%. The impressive supporting cast includes Octavia Spencer, John Hurt, Ed Harris and more.

Bringing the French Graphic Novel to Life

Snowpiercer is based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette. Director Bong Joon Ho stumbled across the comic in a bookshop and was drawn to its concept. But he knew he would need to craft a completely new story to properly adapt it into a film.

Bong worked on the screenplay for years before acquiring the rights in 2007 through producer Park Chan-wook’s company. Pre-production spanned five more years, with Chris Evans joining the project in 2012 shortly before shooting began.

Behind the Scenes of the Ambitious Sci-Fi Production

With a budget of $42 million, Snowpiercer was the biggest Korean-led production at the time. Filming took place over 72 days primarily at Barrandov Studios in Prague, Czech Republic.

The sets for the train’s interconnected cars were designed move and shift like an accordion, allowing shooting from multiple angles inside the cars. The train itself was realized through CGI in exterior shots.

Bong clashed with Harvey Weinstein, whose company The Weinstein Company held the US distribution rights. Weinstein demanded cuts, but Bong refused and got the movie released intact, albeit with a smaller indie rollout.

Snowpiercer’s Critical and Box Office Success

Despite Harvey Weinstein’s attempt to stifle it, Snowpiercer earned nearly $87 million worldwide against its $42 million budget. Reviews were also strong, with the film scoring 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Critics praised the movie’s visual flair, themes of social inequality, and Chris Evans’ lead performance. Snowpiercer is now regarded as one of the best sci-fi films of the 21st century.

The movie’s popularity led to a TV adaptation in 2020 on TNT. The series follows different characters but retains the premise of a class-divided post-apocalyptic train.
