Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden Win Men’s Doubles Title at the 2024 Australian Open

Indian tennis star Rohan Bopanna has won the men’s doubles title at the 2024 Australian Open alongside his partner Matthew Ebden of Australia.

Rohan Bopanna and Ebden defeated the Italian duo of Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori in the finals in straight sets 7-6(4), 7-5 to clinch the trophy.

This is 43-year-old Rohan’s first Grand Slam title in men’s doubles in his career. The victory makes him the oldest man in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam title.

Rohan Bopanna’s First Grand Slam Title After Persistent Efforts

He has been playing top-level tennis for over two decades but a men’s doubles Grand Slam title had eluded him until now.

He had previously reached 3 major finals – 2010 US Open, 2015 Wimbledon, and 2018 French Open – but finished runner-up each time.

Rohan finally realized his dream by winning the 2024 Australian Open men’s doubles title with Ebden.

The Indian has played in 60 Grand Slams before winning his first one, which is a record. His perseverance has finally paid off.

How the Match Unfolded

Rohan Bopanna and Ebden made a strong start, winning their service game easily to go 1-0 up.

But Bolelli-Vavassori fought back valiantly, not giving an inch in their service games to level the set at 1-1.

From there on, both pairs held serve tenaciously as neither pair faced a single break point in the opening set.

At 6-6, the set went into a tie-breaker where he and Ebden upped their game to win it 7-4 and take the first set.

The second set followed a similar pattern with both teams protecting their serve until 5-5.

Rohan Bopanna and Ebden then managed to break Bolelli-Vavassori’s serve to go up 6-5 and served out the match successfully to complete a straight-sets victory.

Bopanna Credits Partnership With Ebden

Speaking after the historic win, he gave full credit to his partner Matthew Ebden.

He said, “Playing with Matt has been amazing. We have had a great partnership and I am so happy to win my first Grand Slam with him.”

Rohan added, “This title is a reward for the hard work Matt and I have put in. I am glad it has finally paid off.”

Ebden also lauded his partner Rohan saying, “Rohan’s experience and skills were invaluable. He guided me throughout the tournament. I would not have this title without him.”
