‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’: Release Date, Cast, Plot, and More

The next chapter in the Planet of the Apes saga is almost here. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will arrive in theaters on May 10, 2024, continuing the story of highly intelligent apes and their relationship with humans. Directed by Wes Ball, the sequel features an all-new cast and promises to expand the ape civilization in exciting new ways. Here’s everything we know so far about the return to the Planet of the Apes.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Release Date

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will hit theaters on May 10, 2024. It was previously set for May 24 but moved up two weeks to give it a wider opening and avoid competition with other summer blockbusters.

The movie will get an exclusive theatrical run, so the only place to watch it initially will be in movie theaters. Eventually it’s likely to stream on Disney+ or Hulu, but no digital release date has been set yet.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Trailer

The first Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes teaser trailer arrived on November 2, 2023. It introduced the new younger ape lead, Noa, and showed apes interacting peacefully with humans. We also get glimpses of the film’s epic scope and ruined city settings.

A full-length theatrical trailer is expected within the next couple months as the release date approaches. This will likely reveal more of the plot, new characters, and epic action.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Story

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes takes place many years after the previous trilogy of Apes films starring Andy Serkis as Caesar. The new story focuses on a young ape named Noa who goes on an adventure to uncover secrets about ape history.

Director Wes Ball has described the film as portraying the apes entering a “Bronze Age” civilization. We’ll see how ape society has advanced technologically and culturally since Caesar’s time. Expect plenty of world-building as we explore new parts of the Planet of the Apes.

Plot details are still limited but we know the main threat will be a tyrannical ape ruler named Proximus Caesar who seeks to enslave other apes. Noa teams up with a human named Mae to try and defeat this villain.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Cast

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes features an all-new cast, with no actors from the previous trilogy returning. Owen Teague plays the lead role of Noa, the young chimpanzee through whose eyes we experience the story. He performs the role through motion capture.

Freya Allan co-stars as the human character Mae. Other key ape roles include Peter Macon as orangutan Raka and Kevin Durand as the villainous Proximus Caesar. Dichen Lachman, William H. Macy, and Sara Wiseman play undisclosed human characters.

Details on who the new actors are playing are still mostly under wraps. But we can likely expect Noa and Mae to go on an epic adventure that tests their relationship and could reshape human and ape relations.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Director

Wes Ball takes over directing duties on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes from the previous trilogy’s director Matt Reeves. Ball is best known for helming the Maze Runner dystopian trilogy.

The director has said he aims to honor the legacy of the previous Apes films while putting his own spin on the world. Expect his background in dystopian sci-fi and experience with big visual set-pieces to be on full display.

Ball and his team also used the latest advancements in motion-capture technology to bring the apes to life even more realistically. So the visual effects should impress.

Connection to Previous Films

While Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes features a new story and characters, the world still shares DNA with the previous movies. Director Wes Ball has said the legacy of Caesar remains important, even if he doesn’t directly appear.

Other elements like technologically advanced apes, human survivors, and the lush woodland settings will feel familiar to fans. The new story builds on the groundwork laid by the Caesar films rather than hitting a total reset.

We’ll have to wait for more plot details to know which characters or story threads might get referenced. But the Planet of the Ape saga clearly continues evolving in exciting new directions.

That covers the key things we know so far about Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes as we await more trailers and details. The new chapter looks to continue the beloved sci-fi franchise in an exciting way. It will feature stunning visuals, new characters, and expand the rich world of highly evolved apes. Expect the franchise to keep on evolving when the film hits theaters this May.
