HBO’s hit show tells the story of the famous Dragonlord family 200 years before Game of Thrones. House of the Dragon season 2 promises more action, battles, scheming, and of course dragons! Read on for everything we know so far about the release date, trailer, cast, plot and more.

House of the Dragon Season 2 Release Date

While HBO has not revealed an exact date, House of the Dragon season 2 is expected to debut in mid-2024. Actor Matt Smith, who plays Daemon Targaryen, hinted the show could return in August during an interview.

Filming for the new season wrapped up in late September 2022 after beginning in April. House of the Dragon season 2 will have 8 episodes, less than the 10 episodes in season 1.

The shorter season 2 could lead to a tighter storyline as the Targaryen civil war heats up. Fans are eager to see the all-out dragon vs. dragon action!

House of the Dragon Season 2 Trailer

HBO released a thrilling first teaser trailer for House of the Dragon season 2 in December 2023. The dramatic footage shows the brewing conflict between Queen Rhaenyra and Queen Alicent’s factions.

We get quick glimpses of armies clashing, dragons soaring overhead, and our favourite characters. The tagline warns that “war will come” as the Targaryen family rips itself apart.

The teaser whets our appetite for the season 2 premiere. More trailers will likely arrive in the coming months. Each one will reveal a bit more of the coming war before the new episodes finally drop.

House of the Dragon Season 2 Cast

Most of the main cast members are set to return for House of the Dragon season 2 Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Queen Alicent Hightower, Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon, Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Targaryen and Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower.

New cast members joining this season include Tom Glynn-Carney as King Aegon II Targaryen, Ewan Mitchell as Prince Aemond Targaryen, Harry Collett as Jacaerys Velaryon and Phia Saban as Princess Helaena Targaryen.

House of the Dragon Season 2 Plot

House of the Dragon season 2 will pick up right after season 1’s explosive finale. King Viserys is dead, leaving a power vacuum and succession crisis.

Queen Alicent quickly arranges for her eldest son Aegon to be crowned as King Aegon II. But Princess Rhaenyra was named heir by Viserys years before. This betrayal by Alicent enrages Rhaenyra and splits the kingdom.

In season 2, the Targaryen civil war will kick into high gear as Rhaenyra fights to take back the Iron Throne from Alicent’s “usurper” son. She still has the backing of her uncle Daemon Targaryen and others who see her as the rightful queen.

But Alicent and her allies believe her son Aegon II should rule. Other noble houses are forced to choose sides in the bloody conflict.

The season 1 finale saw the first dragon-on-dragon battle. There will be much more awe-inspiring action in season 2 as the Targaryens go to war using their powerful dragons. Get ready for scheming, shocking deaths and intense fights!
