Golden Globes 2024: “Oppenheimer” Wins 5 While “Succession” Wins 4 Awards

The 81st annual Golden Globes 2024 awarded top honors to “Oppenheimer” and “Succession” at a ceremony that aimed to turn the page on past scandals. Christopher Nolan’s atomic bomb drama “Oppenheimer” emerged as the top film winner with 5 Golden Globes, while HBO’s hit show “Succession” took home 4 awards.

The Golden Globes, organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), returned to television screens after being off-air last year. NBC had dropped telecasting the 2022 Globes due to an ethics and diversity controversy surrounding the HFPA. This year, the revamped Golden Globes aired on NBC with comedian Jo Koy hosting.

“Oppenheimer” Wins Big With 5 Golden Globe Awards

“Oppenheimer” led the Golden Globes 2024 winners with 5 trophies, establishing itself as a top Oscar contender. The film won Globes for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., and Best Screenplay.

The most nominated film of the night was “Barbie” with 9 nods. However, the Margot Robbie-starrer only managed to win Best Original Song and the newly introduced award for Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.

In the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category, the surreal sci-fi film “Poor Things” emerged victorious. The film’s lead star Emma Stone won Best Actress in the Comedy/Musical category.

“Succession” Continues Emmy Winning Streak at Golden Globes

In the television categories, HBO’s hit show “Succession” continued its awards season streak by grabbing 4 Golden Globes 2024 awards. The dark comedy about a media empire family won Globes for Best TV Series – Drama, Best Actor for Kieran Culkin, Best Actress for Sarah Snook, and Best Supporting Actor for Matthew Macfadyen.

Diverse Winners Make History at Golden Globes 2024

The Golden Globes 2024 also saw some diverse firsts in the acting categories. Lily Gladstone became the first Native American to win Best Actress in a Drama Motion Picture for “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

Meanwhile, Korean-American actor Steven Yeun and Chinese-American comic Ali Wong won Globes for their performances in the Netflix limited series “Beef.”

The HFPA had expanded and diversified its voting body this year after being slammed for lack of diverse members. The wins for Gladstone, Yeun, and Wong displayed the organization’s efforts to course-correct.

Host Jo Koy’s Monologue Falls Flat

Comedian Jo Koy was selected to host the Golden Globes 2024 as the ceremony aimed to rebuild its reputation. However, Jo Koy’s opening monologue did not impress critics and Twitter users.

Many felt Koy’s jokes targeted at the HFPA controversy fell flat. His attempt to roast the industry heavyweights sitting in the audience also backfired.

Overall, Jo Koy’s hosting was panned as one of the worst parts of a chaotic ceremony on social media. The Golden Globes 2024 host failed to find the right tone for an awards show aiming to make a comeback.

HFPA Spreads Awards Across Multiple Films

In classic Golden Globes tradition, the prizes were distributed among several films rather than going to just one or two top winners. Beyond “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things”, movies like “The Holdovers”, “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Barbie” also took home trophies.

Paul Giamatti won Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy Motion Picture for “The Holdovers”, while co-star Da’Vine Joy Randolph nabbed the Supporting Actress award. The HFPA again proved it likes to share the love when handing out Golden Globe statuettes.

Hollywood Returns After Tumultuous Years

The Golden Globes 2024 marked the return of normalcy for Hollywood after two chaotic years. The rise in streaming led to theater closures during the pandemic. Industry labor strikes also brought production to a standstill in 2022.

Despite past controversy, the Globes brought Hollywood’s A-listers under one roof to celebrate cinema and television. Notably, the ceremony avoided any overt political statements or causes.

With flagging viewership numbers, the pressure was on the HFPA to deliver a memorable Golden Globes this year. While the awards were divisive, they did provide entertainment value and glamour to TV audiences. The Globes remain instrumental in building momentum for the upcoming Oscars.
