Gemma Bonner Won the Second LFC Women Player of the Month Award in 2023-24

Gemma Bonner has been named the Liverpool FC Women Standard Chartered Player of the Month for January 2024. This marks the second time this season that Gemma Bonner has received the fan-voted award, after also winning it in November 2023. The veteran defender’s consistently strong performances have cemented her place as a standout player for the Reds this campaign.

Second Award of the Season

By claiming January’s prize, Gemma Bonner joins an elite group of LFC Women players to have won the Player of the Month accolade multiple times within the same season. Her dominant displays at the heart of defence during the first month of 2024 made her the clear choice among supporters.

After also securing the award back in November, Gemma Bonner now has two Player of the Month trophies to her name from the 2023-24 season so far. The centre-back was grateful to receive such recognition again from the club’s passionate supporters.

Gemma Bonner’s Contributions in January

She was a driving force behind Liverpool’s positive results throughout January. She played every minute of the team’s three matches during the month. This included a heroic defensive performance in the Reds’ dramatic FA Cup victory away to Bristol City.

Despite being down to 10 players for over an hour, LFC Women dug deep to pull off a 1-0 win. Gemma Bonner was immense at the back, making vital clearances and blocks under relentless pressure. She then popped up to score a priceless 89th-minute winner.

She also helped Liverpool battle back to draw 1-1 with Tottenham in the league at the end of January. Her commanding presence and non-stop energy never wavered.

Leading by Example

Aside from her defensive skills, Gemma Bonner’s experience and leadership qualities have been invaluable. She has taken many younger squad members under her wing this season.

The No. 23 is always communicating and organizing on the pitch. And she motivates those around her by fearlessly putting her body on the line. Gemma Bonner’s tireless work rate sets the standard for the rest of the team.

At 32 years old, the veteran defender utilizes her wealth of experience to guide the team’s back line. Her commanding performances are a big reason why Liverpool’s defence has held firm despite some difficulties this campaign.

Looking Ahead

After picking up January’s award, Gemma Bonner now sets her sights on continuing Liverpool’s FA Cup run when they face London City Lionesses on February 12. She knows advancing in the prestigious competition is a major goal.

Gemma Bonner also wants to help the Reds move up the WSL table in the coming weeks after some inconsistent results so far. With her tenacious drive and well-organized defending, she will be crucial to any success Liverpool have this season.

The centre-back’s knack for popping up with vital goals could prove decisive down the stretch as well. After her late winner at Bristol, the threat posed by Gemma Bonner on set pieces gives LFC Women an extra weapon in tight games.

The Gemma Bonner Effect

Earning the Standard Chartered Player of the Month award twice already proves just how influential Gemma Bonner has been for Liverpool during 2023-24. Her rock-solid defence, courageous commitment and timely goals have made her an invaluable leader.

Boasting plenty of top-flight experience from spells with Everton, Manchester City and Bristol City, Gemma Bonner’s winning pedigree is a priceless asset. She knows what it takes to be successful in the WSL.

If Liverpool are to achieve their aims this season, whether that’s climbing the table or going on an extended cup run, Gemma Bonner’s contributions will no doubt be at the heart of it.
