Emmys 2024 Winners: Succession, The Bear Sweeps With Big Wins, Including Best Series

Los Angeles, CA – The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, also known as the Emmys 2024, took place last night, honoring the best in television from the past year. The big winners of the evening were HBO’s acclaimed drama Succession and FX’s breakout comedy The Bear, each taking home top prizes.

Succession Dominates Drama Categories

Succession was the most awarded series overall, sweeping the drama categories. The show took home the Outstanding Drama Series award for the second time, beating out tough competition from HBO’s House of the Dragon.

Star Jeremy Strong won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Kendall Roy. This marks Strong’s second win in the category after previously winning in 2020. His on-screen father, Brian Cox, was also nominated alongside Kieran Culkin.

In the supporting actor category, Matthew Macfadyen pulled off a surprise win for his role as Tom Wambsgans, beating out co-stars Nicholas Braun and Culkin. Macfadyen was considered an underdog nominee compared to his castmates.

Sarah Snook also scored an upset, winning Outstanding Supporting Actress over favorites like Julia Garner of Ozark. This capped off a banner night for the Roy family’s dysfunctional drama.

The Bear Mauls Comedy Competition

FX’s The Bear was the big story in the comedy categories, winning Outstanding Comedy Series in its first year of eligibility. The show centers on a young chef who returns home to run his family’s sandwich shop.

Star Jeremy Allen White took home Lead Actor for his intense performance, beating out previous winners like Bill Hader and Jason Sudeikis. Supporting Actress went to The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri, while co-star Ebon Moss-Bachrach won Supporting Actor.

The Bear’s wins represent the rise of FX as an emerging creative powerhouse in the streaming age. The network now joins HBO as the only two to win the main drama and comedy Emmy categories in the same year.

Emmys 2024 Sees Newcomers Enter the Fray

Beyond the big winners, these Emmys 2024 saw many first-time nominees and winners enter the competition. ABC’s acclaimed comedy Abbott Elementary scored several big wins, including Outstanding Writing for Creator Quinta Brunson.

Hulu’s Freshman series Only Murders in the Building saw Martin Short and Steve Martin nominated for their starring roles. Netflix newcomers like South Korean drama Squid Game and coming-of-age hit Wednesday found success.

On the limited series side, HBO’s The White Lotus emerged victorious for its social satire set at a luxury resort. Jennifer Coolidge earned her first Emmy for her supporting role in the buzzy show.

Repeat Winners: Zendaya and Lizzo Continue Emmy Streaks

While the Emmys 2024 introduced many new stars, some familiar faces continued their award show dominance. Zendaya made history as the first Black woman to win Lead Actress in a Drama Series twice, earning her second trophy for Euphoria.

Lizzo extended her reign as winner of the Outstanding Competition Program for her show Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls. RuPaul’s Drag Race, The Voice, and perennial winner The Amazing Race all couldn’t take down Lizzo’s rookie series.

Emmys 2024 By The Numbers

In total, these Emmys 2024 handed out 26 awards in the Primetime telecast. HBO and Netflix lead the networks in total wins with 6 each. Succession’s wins helped HBO retain its title as the network with the most nominations.

The Emmys 2024 saw over 120 different programs competing across all categories. Diversity among nominees increased, with people of color making up over half of acting nominees this year.

The telecast faced its lowest viewership numbers yet, reflecting the declining linear ratings across all award shows. Still, the Emmys 2024 delivered emotional moments, surprising wins, and introduced exciting new talent. After 75 years, TV’s biggest night remains a highlight of the industry.
