Ducati Diavel v4 Review: Features, Specs and Price in India

Ducati has recently launched the much-awaited Diavel v4 in India, marking a major update to their popular power cruiser. The Diavel v4 brings an all-new V4 engine along with revised styling, improved ergonomics and updated electronics. In this article, we take a detailed look at what the new Diavel v4 has to offer.

Overview of the Ducati Diavel v4

The Diavel v4 is the first major update to the Diavel line since its debut in 2010. The most significant change is the new 1,158cc V4 engine which replaces the 1,262cc L-Twin unit of the previous model. This motor is derived from Ducati’s V4 Granturismo models and makes 168hp at 10,750rpm, which is 6hp more than before. Torque output is slightly lower at 126Nm but it still offers brutish acceleration.

Visually, the Diavel v4 has an evolution of the muscular styling with a new twin LED headlamp, revised fuel tank, single-sided swingarm and quad exhaust pipes. The ergonomics are now more relaxed with a slightly upright and spacious riding position. Ducati has also incorporated its latest electronics suite with a 5-inch TFT display, cornering ABS, traction control, wheelie control and more.

The Ducati Diavel v4 retains the muscular stance of its predecessor but gets several changes to freshen up the styling. The LED headlamp is now split into two units and flanked by LED DRLs. The fuel tank looks more chiselled and extensions have been added around the radiator shrouds. The single-sided swingarm, fat 240-section rear tyre and quad exhausts accentuate the bike’s mass.

The ergonomics are significantly revised with a more upright handlebar position and scooped rider seat. This results in a less stretched-out and sporty riding posture which should be more comfortable. Build quality looks excellent with high-quality materials and paint finish. However, some rough edges around the plastics detract from the premium appeal.

Engine Performance of the Ducati Diavel v4

The new 1,158cc, 90-degree V4 motor of the Diavel v4 is the highlight of the bike. This liquid-cooled engine uses Desmodromic valve actuation and makes 168hp at 10,750rpm along with 126Nm torque peaking at 7,500rpm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox with a bi-directional quick-shifter. Fueling duties are handled by a new ride-by-wire system with four riding modes.

According to Ducati, the V4 motor has a strong low-end punch with smooth power delivery across the rev range. It offers visceral Ducati V-twin character and intoxicating high rpm performance. The exhaust note is also said to be raw and aggressive, further enhancing the riding experience. For improved heat management, the Diavel v4 uses a cylinder deactivation system that shuts off the rear bank under light loads.

Underpinnings and Ride Quality

Underpinning the bike is a monocoque aluminium frame which is considerably lighter than the earlier steel trellis unit. The kerb weight has also reduced by 13kg to 236kg. Suspension duties are handled by 50mm Marzocchi USD forks and a Sachs monoshock with an increased travel of 145mm. For braking, the Diavel v4 gets Brembo Stylema callipers biting 330mm front discs.

Thanks to the improved ergonomics and suspension setup, the Ducati Diavel v4 offers better comfort than before. The ride quality is said to have improved with enhanced absorption of bumps despite the firm suspension. Handling is fairly agile for such a heavy bike and it can easily keep up with more focused machines on winding roads. The electronic system also works seamlessly to keep things in control.

Features of the Ducati Diavel v4

The Diavel v4 is equipped with a comprehensive electronics suite managed by a 5-inch TFT display. It gets three selectable riding modes (Urban, Touring and Sport), 8-level traction control, 3-level wheelie control, cornering ABS, up/down quick-shifter, self-cancelling turn indicators and cruise control. The onboard computer also offers Bluetooth connectivity, and call and music controls.

Some other highlights include all-LED lighting, keyless ignition, self-cancelling indicators, adjustable levers, wide handlebars and Pirelli Diablo Rosso III tyres. However, navigation functionality is offered as a paid extra despite the high price. Overall, the Diavel v4 features a good mix of everyday usability and sporty performance.

Price of the Ducati Diavel v4 in India

The Ducati Diavel v4 is priced at ₹25.9 lakh ex-showroom, which is over ₹4 lakh more than the outgoing Diavel 1260. This makes it significantly more expensive than rivals like the Harley Fat Bob. With additional costs, expect an on-road price of around ₹30 lakh.

Ducati is positioning the Diavel v4 as a premium power cruiser with exotic Italian styling and performance. However, the pricing may limit its appeal to only the most hardcore Ducatisti fans in India. Available colours include Ducati Red and Dark Stealth.

Final Thought

The new Diavel v4 builds upon the muscular design and performance of its predecessor while adding greater real-world practicality and technology. The powerful V4 engine offers incredible acceleration along with more manageable heat and improved fuel efficiency. Ride quality is also better thanks to the revised ergonomics and suspension. Electronics like IMU-based cornering ABS further elevate the package.

However, the high pricing could make it out of reach for most buyers. The plastic quality in some areas also feels average. Rivals like the more affordable Harley Fat Bob could be an alternative for some buyers. But if you want the ultimate Italian power cruiser with exotic styling, performance and road presence, the Ducati Diavel v4 delivers in spades.
