Calvin Ramsay

Calvin Ramsay returns to Liverpool from Preston on loan.

Liverpool have recalled young right-back Calvin Ramsay from his loan spell at Preston North End in the Championship.

Ramsay joined Liverpool in the summer of 2022 from Scottish club Aberdeen but injuries hampered the start of his Anfield career. He was loaned to Preston in August to gain experience and has now returned to the Reds after making 15 appearances for the Lilywhites.

Calvin Ramsay’s Liverpool Journey So Far

Calvin Ramsay arrived at Liverpool with plenty of potential after breaking through at Aberdeen and becoming their first-choice right-back while still a teenager.

Liverpool moved swiftly to sign the highly-rated Ramsay in June 2022 to provide competition for veteran defender Trent Alexander-Arnold. However, a back injury in pre-season ruled Ramsay out until September.

He made his Liverpool debut off the bench in an EFL Cup tie against Derby County in November 2022. But with limited opportunities behind Alexander-Arnold, a loan move was planned to aid Ramsay’s development.

Gaining Valuable Experience at Preston

In August 2022, Liverpool sent Calvin Ramsay on a season-long loan to Championship side Preston North End. The move was intended to get the young Scotsman regular playing time at a high level.

Ramsay quickly established himself as first-choice right-back at Preston. He made 18 appearances in all competitions, scoring once, and earned plenty of valuable experience.

However, his progress was hampered by a few injury setbacks. Ramsay still has a decent run of games under his belt and can now return to Liverpool having been tested in the demanding Championship.

What Ramsay’s Preston Loan Means for Liverpool

For Liverpool, the decision to recall Calvin Ramsay midway through the season provides them an extra option at right-back. With the fixtures piling up, Ramsay’s return gives vital depth.

It also allows the coaching staff to closely monitor and work with Ramsay during a crucial development stage. He can train regularly at Liverpool’s elite facilities under the watch of Jurgen Klopp and his staff.

Depending on injuries and form, Ramsay may also get opportunities in Liverpool’s first-team squad over the second half of the season. But another loan move next season could make sense to build his experience if Alexander-Arnold remains first choice.

Calvin Ramsay Offers Modern Full-back Traits

While comparisons will inevitably be drawn to Trent Alexander-Arnold, Calvin Ramsay boasts his modern full-back traits that can benefit Liverpool.

Like Alexander-Arnold, Ramsay poses an attacking threat down the right flank. He provided a string of assists for Aberdeen by overlapping and delivering accurate crosses. His delivery and link-up play suit Liverpool’s system.

But Ramsay is also more natural defensively than Alexander-Arnold. His positioning and one-on-one skills should provide Liverpool more solidity on the right when he plays.

If he reaches his potential, Ramsay gives Klopp tactical flexibility and competition for Alexander-Arnold’s spot long-term.

What Next For Ramsay at Liverpool?

The immediate priority is getting Calvin Ramsay fully fit and sharp again at Liverpool’s training ground. Expect him to feature heavily for the U21s over the coming weeks.

If Ramsay impresses, he could force his way into matchday squads and make his Premier League debut in the next few months. But breaking into the starting XI will be difficult with Alexander-Arnold still clearly the first choice.

A lot may depend on Ramsay’s development trajectory and Alexander-Arnold’s form. If there are any long-term injuries to Alexander-Arnold, it would give Ramsay a chance to shine.

For now, his Liverpool future remains one of potential and promise. But Calvin Ramsay has time on his side to establish himself at Anfield.

Klopp’s Faith in Ramsay’s Abilities

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is renowned for improving young talent, so Calvin Ramsay is in good hands. Klopp pushed for his signing from Aberdeen, fending off rival interest.

Speaking after the deal, Klopp made it clear he sees huge potential in Ramsay:

“There is so much to like about the boy. He’s smart, passionate, and completely desperate to learn, which is an essential quality. His story of development is really interesting.”

Klopp will be eager to integrate Ramsay into his squad upon returning from Preston. The manager has faith that he can mold the promising right-back into a key player for Liverpool’s future.

Ramsay Represents Shrewd Long-term Planning

The acquisition of Calvin Ramsay in 2022 is evidence of Liverpool’s shrewd long-term planning under Klopp. Rather than being reactive, the club got ahead of the curve.

With Alexander-Arnold only 23, right-back is not an immediate need. But in Ramsay, 19, Liverpool have secured Trent’s eventual successor years in advance.

Should Alexander-Arnold ever be struck by a long-term injury, Ramsay will now be ready to step in after his Championship experience.

Liverpool displayed wisdom by buying Ramsay early and allowing him time to learn the system and develop at his own pace.

Calvin Ramsay’s Liverpool journey is still in its infancy but holds great promise. The club has managed his development intelligently so far after signing him as a teenager.

A season gaining experience on loan at Preston has provided a platform for Ramsay to now push on back at Liverpool. If his ability and work ethic match his potential, Ramsay could become an elite right-back and key figure in Liverpool’s future.

For now, regular U21s football awaits upon his return to Anfield. But fans should keep an eye on the progress of Calvin Ramsay. He exhibits all the qualities needed to thrive under Jurgen Klopp and follow Alexander-Arnold’s pathway to stardom.
