Beetlejuice 2 Release Date, Trailer, Cast, Plot and Everything We Know

After over 30 years of waiting, Beetlejuice 2 is finally happening! This highly-anticipated sequel will bring back beloved characters like Betelgeuse and Lydia while introducing some new faces.

Beetlejuice 2 Release Date

Beetlejuice 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on September 6, 2024. Fans have been waiting for a sequel ever since the original film debuted back in 1988. Director Tim Burton and stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara are all set to return for the new movie. Plot details are still mostly under wraps, but anticipation is building as the release date gets closer.

Beetlejuice 2 Trailer

Unfortunately, there is no trailer for Beetlejuice 2 yet. The movie just completed filming in late 2023, so it will likely be a little while still before a full trailer is revealed.

Some brief footage of the sequel was shown at CinemaCon 2023 to get fans excited. It featured the return of Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice, along with new co-star Jenna Ortega. Fans are eagerly awaiting the first full Beetlejuice 2 trailer to get a better look at what’s in store.

Beetlejuice 2 Cast

Several familiar faces are returning for Beetlejuice 2. Michael Keaton will reprise his role as the ghost with the most, Betelgeuse. Winona Ryder is also coming back as Lydia Deetz, now grown up with a daughter of her own.

Catherine O’Hara will play Delia Deetz once again. Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis starred in the original as Adam and Barbara Maitland, but they are not expected to appear in the sequel.

Newcomer Jenna Ortega has been cast as Lydia’s daughter in this movie. She will be following in her mother’s footsteps as a goth outsider who befriends the undead. Other new cast members include Willem Dafoe and Monica Bellucci.

Beetlejuice 2 Plot

Plot details are still mostly under wraps for the highly secretive movie. It is expected to be set 30 years after the original movie, with Lydia now an adult with her own family. Keaton has said the sequel will have a very similar handmade, practical effects look to the first Beetlejuice.

Director Tim Burton has hinted Beetlejuice 2 will focus on family and human connections, with Betelgeuse presumably still causing wacky hijinks among the living and the dead. The screenplay is based on a story idea from Seth Grahame-Smith, who worked with Burton on Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Why Did Beetlejuice 2 Take So Long to Happen?

Fans have been waiting over 30 years for a Beetlejuice sequel. Burton and Keaton expressed interest in making a follow-up movie called Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian in the early 1990s, but it ended up stalled in development hell.

In the 2000s, screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith came on board to develop a Beetlejuice 2 script. The project went through more delays before Warner Bros. officially shelved it in 2019 when the Beetlejuice Broadway musical opened.

It wasn’t until 2022 that Beetlejuice 2 finally got the official green light to start production. Now fans can’t wait to see the Ghost with the Most back on the big screen once again after so many years.

Could Beetlejuice 2 Lead to More Sequels?

Beetlejuice became a cult classic upon its original release, so another sequel isn’t out of the question. However, Keaton has said Beetlejuice 2 isn’t envisioned as the start of a new franchise trilogy. Much will likely depend on how successful the first sequel is with fans.

If Beetlejuice 2 does big business at the box office, there could be potential for Betelgeuse to continue haunting the silver screen. Keaton seems game to keep playing the character, it will just come down to whether audiences have an appetite for more wild and wacky adventures in the world of Beetlejuice.

Where Can I Catch Up on the Original Beetlejuice?

To refresh your memory before Beetlejuice 2, the original 1988 film is available to rent or buy on digital platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, YouTube and more. The offbeat supernatural comedy still holds up wonderfully, with Keaton at his comedic best as the obnoxious Bio-Exorcist Betelgeuse.

Relive all the creepy, kooky fun that made Beetlejuice such an enduring favourite. The movie is also currently streaming for free on platforms like Tubi. Be sure to rewatch this classic gem to get hyped up for the long-awaited sequel finally arriving in 2024!
