True Story Behind Arthur the King

Arthur the King is based on the incredible true story of Mikael Lindnord and his adopted dog Arthur. In 2014, Lindnord was competing in the Adventure Racing World Championship in Ecuador with his Swedish team Peak Performance.

During one stage of the race through the Ecuadorian jungle, Lindnord met a badly wounded stray dog who started following them. Lindnord gave the dog some food and after that, he refused to leave their side.

Lindnord named the dog Arthur after King Arthur, impressed by his loyal and noble spirit. Arthur completed the entire 6-day, 430-mile race with the team. His presence lifted morale and brought the team together as they faced wet, muddy, brutal conditions.

After the race, Lindnord adopted Arthur and brought him home to Sweden. Arthur underwent medical treatment for his wounds and became a celebrity dog. Lindnord published a book about their journey called Arthur: The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home.

Sadly, Arthur passed away in 2020 after battling cancer. But Lindnord continues to honour his memory through The Arthur Foundation, which provides care and homes for Ecuadorian strays.

While Arthur the King fictionalizes some elements, it aims to capture the true heart and emotion of Lindnord and Arthur’s incredible friendship.

Arthur the King Plot

Arthur the King focuses on Michael Light (Mark Wahlberg), a pro adventure racer desperate for redemption. His career took a nosedive after a scandal, leaving his sponsors and the public doubtful.

The film opens with Michael convincing a key sponsor, Bombardier, to back him and a ragtag team for one final shot at the Adventure Racing World Championship in the Dominican Republic. If Michael wins, he’ll restore his reputation. If not, his career could be over for good.

Once the race begins, we meet Arthur, an injured stray dog who attaches himself to Michael’s team. Michael initially wants nothing to do with the mutt, focused only on winning. But Arthur’s loyalty slowly begins to melt his heart.

Throughout the 10-day, 435-mile race, Michael forms an unbreakable bond with Arthur. This relationship forces him to learn important lessons about teamwork, sacrifice and the true meaning of victory.

In the end, Arthur transforms not just Michael but the entire team, teaching them to depend on each other and persevere through immense adversity.
