Tomb of Sultan Mahmud Ghaznavi

Sultan Mahmud Ghaznavi was the first leader in the Muslim history who proclaimed himself as a Sultan. He became the second ruler of his state called as Ghaznavid. Sultan Mahmud Ghaznavi was also called as Yamin-ud-Dawla Abul-Qaṣim Maḥmud ibn Sebuktegin.

Abu Mansur Sabuktigin who was the great warrior was his father. Sultan was born in Ghazna in 1974 A.D. The birth place of Sultan was in the south-eastern side of recent Afghanistan. He was also buried in his hometown.

In 1974, a horrible earthquake shattered the whole town leaving the many homes destroyed that were almost disappeared from the earth. The earthquake also hit the tomb of Sultan Mahmud Ghaznavi very badly due to which the grave was separated into two pieces.

Late Zahir Shah was the state ruler at that time and he gave order to rebuild it but another place. So people dug the grave with the purpose of transferring the body into another grave. During the time of digging, they all were surprised when they saw the coffin of Sultan Mahmud Ghaznavi.

The coffin was very clean without any stain of soil or anything else. It was showing the resemblance as it was his first day of his death. The body was quite normal as it was placed at that time when the grave was dug. The hands of the body were also very soft as the living ones. It was the big emblem of pious people.

In 997 A.D, Sultan became the second ruler of his state after his Father’s death. It was also a difficult task to get throne as his brother took over the throne forcefully. So he deiced to fight with his brother and he defeated him and got throne from his brother Ismail.

At the time of his leadership, he Showed patience and tolerance to his non-Muslim subjects and gave them free hand to offer their religious matters. Sultan Mahmud Ghaznavi’s decisions and policies were appreciated from his subject and they all were very happy from his Sultan. He died in 1030 A.D and buried in Ghazna.
